How do your counseling sessions work?
We begin with a confidential intake to understand your goals, boundaries, and concerns. From there, we develop a tailored plan that may include therapuetic sessions, educational resources, and actionable exercises you can practice between meetings.
I am nervous and scared about what I wish to share.
Your are not alone with this concern. Doug takes a nonjudgemental stance on subjects that are brought up by clients. Doug is allied with the Kink, LGBTQI, Polyamorous and other under represented communities. One of the most impactful elemtents to healing is sharing your story in a safe place allow shame to deminish. Doug believs his mission is to help others find, develop their own sexual values.
Is everything we discuss really private?
Absolutely. All sessions follow strict professional ethics and privacy standards. Your personal information and the details of your conversations remain confidential at all times.
Do you Accept Insurance?
Yes, Doug does accept certtain insurances. At this moment I accept Aetna, United Health Care, Optum, Blue Cross Blue Shield (Nevada), UMR and Cigna. Unfortunately, Doug does not accept Medicaid at this time. If you have questions about your insurance please contact Doug.
What Is Somatic Sex Therapy?
Somatic Sex Therapy is a body-centered approach to working with sexual concerns, intimacy challenges, and relationship issues. It blends traditional talk therapy with guided awareness of bodily sensations, nervous system responses, breath, movement, and sometimes structured touch exercises (depending on the practitioner’s training and local laws).
The word somatic comes from the Greek soma, meaning “body.” Unlike purely cognitive approaches, somatic sex therapy focuses on how sexual experiences, trauma, pleasure, shame, and arousal are stored and expressed in the body.
Somatic sex therapy is influenced by:
Body-based trauma therapy (like somatic experiencing)
Mindfulness practices
Sex therapy models
Neuroscience of arousal and attachment
Some practitioners are licensed psychotherapists with somatic training. Others may be certified somatic sex educators or practitioners (for example, through organizations like The Somatic Sex Educators Association). The scope of practice depends on their credentials and local regulations.
Sessions may include:
Guided body awareness exercises
Breathwork
Movement or posture exploration
Nervous system regulation skills
Education about arousal and pleasure
Communication and boundary practices
In some professional models (such as somatic sex education, not psychotherapy), structured and consent-based touch exercises may be included. In licensed psychotherapy, touch is usually limited or not included.
How It Can Help Clients
1. Sexual Dysfunction
It may support clients experiencing:
Low desire
Erectile difficulties
Pain during sex
Difficulty reaching orgasm
Desire Discrepancy
By increasing body awareness and reducing anxiety in the nervous system, clients often learn to shift from performance-focused thinking to embodied sensation.
2. Trauma and Shame
Sexual trauma, religious shame, or early relational wounds often live in the body as tension, numbness, or hyperarousal.
Somatic work helps clients:
Notice body sensations safely
Build regulation skills
Reconnect with pleasure gradually
Develop consent and boundary awareness
3. Difficulty Feeling Pleasure
Some people report feeling “numb” or disconnected during intimacy. Somatic therapy can help them:
Identify where they hold tension
Slow down arousal
Expand capacity for sensation
Develop emotional safety in the body
4. Relationship & Intimacy Challenges
Couples may use somatic practices to:
Improve communication about touch
Understand attachment patterns
Reduce anxiety during intimacy
Practice presence and attunement
5. Performance Anxiety
By shifting focus from outcome (orgasm, erection, “doing it right”) to embodied experience, clients often reduce anxiety and increase satisfaction.
What It Is Not
It is not sex surrogacy (though some clients confuse the two).
It is not erotic massage.
It is not sexual services.
Ethical practitioners operate within strict consent, boundaries, and professional guidelines.
Who Might Benefit?
Somatic sex therapy may be especially helpful for people who:
Feel stuck in their head during sex
Have a trauma history
Struggle with chronic shame
Want to deepen embodied pleasure
Have tried talk therapy but still feel disconnected in their body
Does Sex Therapy Work, and Can it Help Me?
While exact numbers vary by study, research suggests that a majority of clients (often roughly 50–80%) report positive results from sex therapy for sexual dysfunction and related concerns. Client satisfaction and self-reported improvement are common, though rates depend heavily on the issue treated and how outcome is measured.
